A row is brewing between Nyeri County and National Environment Management Authority (Nema) over the relocation of the county’s largest dumpsite.
The Nyeri County government has identified an alternative land in Mweiga Town in the outskirts of Nyeri town to be used as the sanitary landfill.
However the Nyeri County has gone ahead to invite tenders for the construction of the Asian Quarter’s Transport Termini even before the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) carries out an assessment study.
Last year July 2018, the county lost millions when they attempted to relocate the same dumpsite. “We spent a lot in fueling and hiring bulldozers to clear the mountain that was here only for the NEMA to stop us.” Nyeri Government official disclosed to our reporter.
“We are hoping that this time round the process we go through smoothly.” Continued the official.
The new dumpsite is being re-located to Mweiga Town. This has lead to the area MCA Kawanjiku Kawanjiku being roughed up by the residents for allowing this development. Newsline.co.ke will bring you more on this as it unfolds.
