Nyeri Land Rates Battles Gain Momentum

The Nyeri County Government has come up with a proposal that will affect the land rates of Nyeri Town Constituency land properties in the County.

However the proposal is shrouded in great secrecy and there has been no public participation as required by law.

“Article one (1) of our constitution clearly states that, the sovereign power is with the people. This means leaders cannot make decisions that affect the welfare of their citizens without their input. Nothing about us, without us!” Noted the Vocal Nyeri MP.

“To decide what to do about the Nyeri Town constituency office convened what we later agreed will be called the ‘Landowners Action Lobby Group’ at the Nyeri Town NG-CDF Hall yesterday. The key outcome from the over 3-hour long meeting was that my office send a letter to Governor Mutahi Kahiga demanding that he call a public baraza to discuss his land rates proposal within seven days. This meeting must be called openly, not through selective mobilization.” the MP continued.

Letter addressed to Nyeri County Governor Hon Mutahi Kahiga

“If Kahiga does not call for this public baraza as per our request Nyeri Residents will then organize public demonstrations to his office to force him to explain why he thinks he can sneak in policies that affect our land, without our input. He must remember Nyeri fought off Colonialists for doing things like this.” An angry resident commented.

It is noted that the Nyeri county alone returned 1.6 billion to the exchequer since they were unable to utilize this fund. The Nyeri residents then wonder why the government need more taxes when they can even utilize what they are getting from the national government.

Calls to the governor by our correspondent to ascertain whether the letter was received went unanswered.
