The last few weeks have been very tough for Deputy President William Ruto. From being relegated to the sidelines of the Jubilee government to the ouster of his key allies from influential leadership positions at the Senate, the DP is a man under siege.
President Uhuru Kenyatta means business, and he is keen to stamp his authority in the running of both the government and Jubilee Party.
First, the axe fell on Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and his Nakuru counterpart Susan Kihika, who were ousted from Senate leadership.
On Friday, it was Tharaka Nithi Senator Kindiki Kithure’s turn on the chopping block. In just a space of one week, Ruto had lost influence in the house. And now, Uhuru is firmly on the driving seat.
Amid all this, is President Kenyatta recklessly handling the Deputy President? Could his recent political moves backfire in the long run? Could the onslaught on the DP prove costlier?
The ouster of Prof Kindiki could be very suicidal. And the President could leave to regret it.
The larger Meru region where Prof Kindiki comes from is one of Uhuru’s loyal support base. Twice, the vote-rich area supported President Kenyatta. So, how will they react after the ouster of their son?
Naturally, the region will reconsider their support for the President in future. Though Uhuru is expected to go home after the 2022 poll, there are indications that he could remain “hanging around”.
His allies have insisted that the President is “too young to retire” and that he will be in the next government. Whatever the case, Uhuru will have an uphill task to convince the Meru region that he is the man to take care of their interests on the national political stage.
With Murkomen and Kihika out amid reports of the more planned purge on Ruto loyalists, could the DP end up having the last laugh?
As a master politician who knows to appeal to people’s emotions, Dr Ruto will surely go out and narrate how he has been mistreated in the government he helped create. He will portray the President as a “bad man”. People will listen to him. Eventually, they will give him sympathy votes.
As for Uhuru, his political goose will be cooked and will end up disappearing into oblivion.
