When Covid19 pandemic first case was reported in Kenya in March 13, all learning institutions were immediately closed. Learners have now been at home for the last four months. A record break since Kenya was born. This has lead to myriad of crisis in our homes. Worst hit of all is the girl child. The number of teenage pregnancies has sky rocketed to unfathomable number. For instance, in Machakos County, 4,000 cases of teenage pregnancies has been documented.
The girl child crisis issue has not escaped Nyeri business lady cum musician Maggy Sonnie’s eye. Maggie is also a philanthropist going by the number of welfare initiatives she has supported. When Newsline.co.ke team visited the humble business lady, we sought to know more about ‘SAVE A GIRL INITIATIVE’.
“I thought of the idea of Save a Girl Initiative after coming across a case that almost made me shed tears. A teenage girl from my neighborhood disclosed to me that she requested her mum money to buy sanitary pads but the mum had no money. The girl resorted to using old pieces of cloths. As a parent i felt so sad and gave the girl money to buy the pads.” Maggy told our writers.
“I asked myself so many questions one being the number of girls undergoing the same challenges silently. The only option was requesting my friends to join hands we do something for our girls since i cannot manage all the cases alone. Am also linking up with area teachers from their homes so that we can identify needy cases. Lack of sanitary pads makes our teenage susceptible to older men leading to early pregnancies.” Maggy continued.
For now the Mukurwe-ini born business lady is concentrating on needy cases in Nyeri County before evaluating cases in other counties. “We will handle these cases one after a time since Almighty God has blessed me with like minded friends who i believe will join hands with me.”, Maggy concluded.
