A man who is alleged to have kidnapped his wife and kept her hidden in Meru County has been brought to court.
Abdullahi Mohammed Gullei was presented before Senior Magistrate Bernard Ochoi at the Milimani Court.
Gullei was accused of kidnapping Shankara Adan Hassan on Likoni Road, Nairobi, on October 12, 2023, while she was in a taxi.
“The complainant (Shankara) was in a taxi headed home around 3:30 PM on October 12, 2023. When she reached Likoni Road, an unregistered vehicle stopped them, and a man dressed as a police officer ordered Shankara to get out of the taxi and into the ‘police’ vehicle,” the court was informed.

The court was told that the victim was placed in a car with no license plates and taken to Maua, Meru, where she was held in an uninhabited house.
The police requested the court to detain Gullei for seven days for questioning and to determine his citizenship.
Presenting the request for Gullei’s seven-day detention, Chief Inspector Carolyne Mutiso stated that the suspect was arrested in Maua on October 14, 2023, and transported to Nairobi on October 15, 2023, where he was held at the Shauri Moyo police station.
“I request that this court orders the suspect to be held for seven days to establish his citizenship. The police suspect that this kidnapping suspect is a citizen of a neighboring country,” SSG Mutiso asked the court.
The magistrate was informed that it was ironic for the police to claim that Gullei was a citizen of a neighboring country when he possessed an identification card.
“I strongly object to Gullei’s seven-day detention. He is a Kenyan citizen, and the complainant is his wife. It’s ironic for the police to claim that Gullei kidnapped his wife,” lawyer George Ayienda told the magistrate.
Bw. Ayienda was assisted by Hargreaves Nyabira.
Gullei was released on bail.
The magistrate will make a decision on Tuesday on whether to detain him for seven days or not.
