President William Ruto has nominated former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho as the new Cabinet Secretary for Mining, replacing Aisha Jumwa as the coastal region’s representative.
Hassan Joho, who served as Governor of Mombasa County from 2013 to 2022, brings extensive experience in governance and public administration to the Ministry of Mining.
Joho has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, especially in the coastal region, known for his transformative leadership in Mombasa.
Joho, a key ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, signifies President Ruto’s aim to establish a broad-based government that embraces diverse political perspectives.
This move is part of a broader strategy to promote unity and inclusivity in the nation’s leadership.
Aisha Jumwa, the outgoing CS for Gender and Culture, has been relieved of her duties in this reshuffle. Both Jumwa and Joho were once staunch members of the ODM party in the coastal region before their political paths diverged; Jumwa joined the UDA party while Joho continued to campaign for Raila Odinga.
Joho’s nomination will now undergo parliamentary vetting, a standard process that will determine his official appointment. If confirmed, he will oversee Kenya’s mining sector, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and development.
