When Alex Wachira stepped onto the grounds of the iconic KAWI House to assume the role of Principal Secretary at the State Department of Energy, he was well aware of the enormity of the shoes he was expected to fill.
He was succeeding Maj. Gen (Rtd) Dr. Gordon Kihalangwa, and his predecessor, Dr. Eng. Joseph Njoroge, had left a lasting impact on the energy sector. However, Wachira had no intentions of merely continuing in their footsteps; he aimed to soar to uncharted heights.
Born in 1982 in Nyeri County, Kenya, Alex Wachira, also known as ‘Wa-Total’ in various circles, is a multifaceted individual.
He boasts a robust background in investment banking, demonstrating a deep understanding of the financial world, particularly in stocks and bonds. His career in the thriving Kenyan money market began during his university days when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Wachira’s talents extend beyond the financial realm. He is an advocate for breast cancer awareness, firmly believing in the importance of early testing.
His commitment to the cause goes beyond words, as he is highly qualified and experienced in conducting breast cancer assessments.
Driven by a strong belief in servant leadership and rooted in family values, Wachira attributes his ethical principles to his upbringing.
He is a man who strives for success and maintains an unwavering determination to achieve excellence in all his endeavors. The mantra of never settling for less has guided him throughout his life.
Transitioning from the private sector to public service marked a significant shift for Wachira.
He quickly learned that government leadership demanded long hours and a different work ethic compared to his previous experiences in the private sector. His weekends were no longer solely his own, as work-related matters often demanded his attention.
In his role as Principal Secretary at the State Department of Energy, Wachira encountered numerous challenges.
One pressing issue was the hydrology challenges affecting power generation in Kenya’s hydroelectric dams. Particularly, the poor hydrology conditions at the Masinga dam, the largest hydropower reservoir in Kenya, caused significant concern.
Nevertheless, Wachira expressed hope that the situation would improve with the onset of the long rains.
To address Kenya’s energy needs, Wachira emphasized the country’s investment in geothermal energy. He assured Kenyans that there was no imminent threat of power rationing, thanks to these efforts.
Despite the demands of his position, Wachira remained dedicated to achieving success in all his endeavors. He valued resolving issues promptly and ensured that he went to bed each night with a sense of accomplishment.
As Kenya approached Vision 2023, Wachira’s focus shifted towards achieving 100% clean energy usage in the country, expanding universal access to electricity, and promoting clean cooking nationwide.
In his personal life, Wachira was an avid football enthusiast and a staunch supporter of Arsenal. He embraced life with a philosophy similar to a football match – one where one can win, learn from losses, and keep moving forward.
Away from work, he had a passion for swimming and enjoyed relaxing by the pool. He also had an affinity for fast cars, relishing sunny days behind the wheel while listening to soft rock music.
Regarding social media, Wachira had a distinct perspective. He believed in maintaining a clear boundary between public and private life, sharing only what was necessary with the public.
Looking ahead, when he eventually retired from his roles in business and public service, Wachira envisioned a life on an expansive farm, possibly in Kieni, Nyeri County.
There, he hoped to have a ranch with numerous cattle, focusing on hay farming and producing delicious nyama choma to enjoy with guests.
