Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and his Westlands colleague Tim Wanyonyi have been tipped as potential and powerful individuals who have what it takes to topple Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027.

While this may seem to be too early in the day to call,Babu Owino’s rising start in Nairobi politics cannot be underestimated.

The Embakasi legislator has yet to officially declare interest in the seat but his fanbase has been pushing him to go for it.

Babu Owino commands a huge following in Nairobi’s Eastlands and his appeal to the youthful generation remains unrivalled.

It is worth noting that the first Governor of Nairobi Dr.Evans Kidero was voted out in 2017 ams his predecessor Mike Sonko was impeached in 2019.

Sonko’s predecessor Ann Kananu did not make the cut to contest the seat in the 2022 elections. The biggest question among Nairobi voters is if Sakaja has what it to takes to break the norm and get reelected to serve two terms.

Former Utalii Ward MCA Wilson Ochola opines that it won’t be difficult to send Sakaja home.

“Any of them and I mean Babu or team if supported by ODM party leader Raila Odinga and the entire Azimio leadership then Sakaja will pack and go”

Tim Wanyonyi was in contest for the Azimio ticket in 2022 but a makeshift arrangement saw former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe walk away with the ticket.Igathr struggled to appeal to the Nairobi voter and many Azimio supporters opted to vote for Sakaja.

There have been suggestions among Azimio supporters for Tim and Babu to join hands and form one ticket but that cannot be ascertained as everyone is trying to hide their cards.

Babu has been critical of some of the decisions made by the Sakaja administration.

While Sakaja promised to end and paralyse the cartel network at City Hall, the trend seems to have grown even bigger.

Reports of ghost payments to legal firms and requisition on suspect payments have been flagged by the Controller of Budget.

On Friday, Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai claimed that cartels are in full control of revenue collection in the county.

Observers say there is a lot which Sakaja’s possible opponents can use against him in 2027.
