Mayez Sadrubin Bhanji, a businessman facing charges of fraud, exhibited rude and disrespectful behavior during a court session where he also threatened a witness testifying against him. The incident led to his removal from the courtroom by court orderlies under the magistrate’s direction.

Bhanji stands accused of defrauding Nadia Farouk Chaudhry of Sh607,500, which was intended for an elderly medical insurance policy.

The charge sheet alleges that the accused stole the said sum from the complainant, contrary to the law. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Bhanji has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, even as the court suggested resolving the matter out of court.

The court proceedings took a dramatic turn when a witness, Nadia Farouk Chaudhry, testified against Bhanji. She recalled receiving a renewal policy for her father’s medical cover, which was handled internally by Allianz Worldwide Care.

However, during a medical checkup at a city hospital, she discovered that the documents provided by Bhanji and associates were not valid. When she confronted Bhanji, he assured her the cover was still active and asked her to return to the hospital and speak to specific individuals.

Unconvinced, Chaudhry directly contacted Allianz Worldwide Care for an update on her father’s policy, only to be informed that the cover had not been active since 2016. Alarmed by the discovery, she reported the matter, leading to Bhanji’s arrest and subsequent arraignment in court.

During the trial, Bhanji’s conduct worsened when he directed threats towards the witness, prompting the magistrate to intervene and order his removal from the courtroom.

The case proceeded in his absence, and he now faces the possibility of several years in jail if found guilty and convicted of the charged offense.

Bhanji is currently out on a cash bail of Sh150,000 while awaiting the continuation of the trial scheduled for October 12.

The court has emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair trial and protecting witnesses, and further investigations may lead to additional charges against Bhanji in the future.

The case has drawn attention due to the significant sum involved and the allegations of fraud. The court will remain vigilant in upholding justice and ensuring that all parties receive a fair hearing as the trial continues.
