A former city MCA has been fined Sh500,000 or serve two years in jail for soliciting and receiving a bribe of Sh140,000 to influence a county committee not to recommend the demolition of market stalls in a City Ward seven years ago.

Njuguna Mwangi who is a former Maringo/Hamza ward MCA, was found guilty and convicted by Milimani Anti-Corruption Court Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Nzioki.

At the same time, the magistrate acquitted his co-accused, who is also a former Komarock Ward MCA Samuel Irungu Mwangi for lack of evidence.

Irungu shed tears when he heard the magistrate acquit him saying, “he never conceived the idea of soliciting a bribe from two traders at Saika Market in Komarock Ward.”

Sentencing the accused, Nzioki said corruption has eroded confidence in government agencies and institutions.
