Dating at Age of 28 and Other Interesting Facts About Mutahi Ngunyi

Political analyst Prof Mutahi Ngunyi is one of the brilliant brains on matters politics.

He is known for a column he published on Sunday Nation and coining the popular phrase “Tyranny of Numbers” as Kenya headed to 2013 elections.

There are however interesting facts about Mutahi;

1)   Was part of first Sheng speakers.

Mutahi was brought up in Maringo estate in Eastlands, Nairobi in 1970s and according to him, they were the pioneer speakers of sheng.

He says they invented it when Eastlands was organized African elites neighbourhood.

“We call ourselves the sheng nation” Mutahi says.

2)   He came last in school exams.

From the beginning he was not a blight student while at Dr Kraft Primary School and later at Aquinas High School.

While at Aquinas he came position 38 out of 39 but when he reached Form Four he pulled up the socks and was in top six.

His mother had warned him if he kept tailing he would end up working as a clerk at his bright friend’s clinic.

The only person he used to defeat became a watchman but in the final examinations Mutahi was the only one who scored a distinction in Mathematics.

3)   Watched TV for the first time while aged 19.

Though he was brought up in urban area he got access to television while he had completed high school.

His father was a Reverend and did not believe in TV. He bought one when Mutahi was 19.

4)   Started dating while he was 28 years old.

He grew up in Church and even after he went to high school he decided to serve God and forfeit relationship with girls.

He was the church pianist and guitarist. He interacted with a girl when he was 28 years old during a wedding at Citam Church along Valley Road, a girl who became his wife.

5)   Married a Kalenjin woman.

Mutahi fell in love with Dr Judith Lang’at during a wedding at Citam Church where both were pianist for different performers.

They were playing different styles, so Judith asked Mutahi they compare their notes and that moment he got opportunity to know her better.

“I grabbed the chance and I gave her my number which was a landline number of a booth near our home” Mutahi revealed in a past interview.

The wife is also director of their Fort Hall School of Government.

6)   Lost a son before he was born.

A painful turn of events when he expected a son. The boy died before he was born.

For the last 28 years of their marriage the couple has sired three girls. All educated abroad. Two are lawyers and the other an economist.

7)   Loves playing chess.

Before going to sleep every day, Mutahi plays chess on his computer.

He says this is his remaining hobby after the other one of writing a column on Sunday Nation was terminated.

He sees it as a way of meditating.
