Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to combatting illicit brew and drug abuse across the country.
Speaking in Embu on Tuesday, Gachagua emphasized that the government will persist in its efforts until the menace of drug and alcohol abuse is completely eradicated.
Gachagua made these remarks while witnessing the signing of a significant multi-million-shilling contract between the National Housing Corporation and the Embu Jua Kali Business Inclusivity Craft Workers Association.
The contract aims to bolster the operations of Jua Kali artisans based in Embu town, who will be tasked with supplying doors and windows worth Sh10.9 million for the Majimbo affordable housing project.
Highlighting the vital role of the affordable housing initiative in the fight against illicit brews and substance abuse, Gachagua noted that many youths, previously mired in alcoholism and drug addiction, were now gainfully employed in construction activities.
“The battle against illicit brews will not cease until we have completely vanquished the scourge,” asserted Gachagua. “The affordable housing project is a key player in this fight, as it provides meaningful employment opportunities for our youth.”
According to Gachagua, the government has engaged thousands of skilled Jua Kali artisans who are instrumental in the implementation of the Affordable Housing Project, benefiting numerous unemployed youths across various counties.
Gachagua further emphasized that the flagship housing scheme was tailored to empower millions of skilled youths who had long been deprived of employment opportunities.
During the event, Gachagua encouraged the contracted youth to obtain formal certification for their acquired skills, stressing the importance of the Recognition of Prior Learning Framework in legitimizing their expertise.
“The affordable housing project holds immense significance for our nation. In addition to providing decent housing for our citizens, it is also generating thousands of job opportunities for our youth, as exemplified here in Embu today,” remarked Gachagua.
Accompanying Gachagua were Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, Deputy Governor Kinyua Mugo, Senator Alexander Mundigi, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Mbeere South MP Nebart Muriuki, Runyenjes MP Eric Karemba, Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, and other dignitaries.
Also present were Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, NHC Chairman Yusuf Chanzu, Kirimari Ward MCA Ibrahim Swaleh, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, who serves as the National Assembly Majority Whip, and UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
