Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, along with government officials and partners, visited Garissa County on Thursday to address the aftermath of severe flooding that has deeply impacted numerous families.
During the visit, Gachagua stressed the urgent need for quick action in responding to disasters, highlighting the importance of both short-term relief and long-term solutions to tackle the challenges posed by such calamities.
“We comforted the families who have suffered from the floods and assessed the situation for better interventions. The severity of the impact of these floods shows we need both short-term and long-term solutions to prevent similar challenges,” Gachagua emphasized.
He committed to collaborating with local leaders, government bodies, and partners to develop effective interventions and infrastructure improvements to address the recurring problem of flooding, not only in Garissa but also in other parts of Northern Kenya.
“We will work with leaders from Garissa and other Northern Kenya counties, as well as partners, to develop interventions and build structures to increase resilience against similar occurrences in the future,” he stated.
Gachagua was accompanied by key officials including Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, and ASALs and Regional Development Principal Secretary Harsama Kello.
Also present were Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, Senator Abdul Haji, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Deputy Governor Abdi Dakane, along with Members of Parliament and grassroots leaders representing affected constituencies.
