The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has officially stated its opposition to the recent impeachment motion targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The party emphasized the need for unity among Kenyans during challenging times.
In a press statement released by Secretary General Dr. Jacob Haji, the party reiterated its long-standing commitment to fostering national cohesion, as encapsulated in its motto, “Umoja na Haki” (Unity and Justice).
The statement clarified that the Members of Parliament affiliated with the Democratic Party who signed the impeachment motion did so independently and not as representatives of the party’s position.
“We do not support the impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua,” Dr. Haji declared, stressing that this was not the right time for such actions given the current socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
The Democratic Party called attention to ongoing strikes in key institutions, including universities, hospitals, and teacher service organizations, and urged leaders to prioritize finding solutions for the betterment of the country.
Additionally, the party condemned any proposals aimed at increasing the presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, appealing to the public to disregard such discussions.
The DP encouraged citizens to participate in organized public forums starting October 4, 2024, to voice their opposition to the impeachment motion and any related constitutional amendments.
“The unity of our country comes first and is paramount,” Dr. Haji concluded, reinforcing the party’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and development in Kenya.
