Drama unfolded at Nairobi’s Jeevanjee Gardens on Thursday, January 16, 2025, during a food donation event organized by the grassroots movement, Bunge la Mwananchi. The initiative, aimed at distributing essential foodstuffs to over 500 vulnerable families, was disrupted when street families and goons stormed the event, leading to a chaotic scramble and destruction of food packages.

The donation, supported by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, was part of an effort to extend goodwill to Nairobi residents as they face tough economic times. The food items, including maize flour, sugar, rice, and cooking oil, were meant to provide relief to families struggling with the rising cost of living.

Speaking at the event, Francis Awino, President of Bunge la Mwananchi, expressed the organization’s commitment to helping its members navigate the harsh economic climate.

“We understand the struggles Kenyans are facing, which is why we have organized this event to provide relief to our members. It’s our way of standing in solidarity with them during these difficult times,” Awino stated.

He also extended gratitude to Governor Sakaja for his support, describing the governor as the driving force behind the initiative.

Despite the good intentions, the event descended into chaos when uninvited individuals disrupted the distribution process, resulting in the destruction of food packages. Organizers struggled to maintain order, but the situation spiraled out of control.

Beyond the donation, Awino used the platform to criticize the government’s handling of economic issues. He reaffirmed Bunge la Mwananchi’s position as an unofficial opposition voice, holding the government accountable to the public.

“We are dissatisfied with the government’s performance so far. Bunge la Mwananchi is ready to act as the people’s voice to ensure their concerns are addressed,” Awino said.

The event, though marred by disruption, highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by many Kenyans and the urgent need for solutions to the economic hardships gripping the nation.
