The East African Business Council (EABC), in collaboration with TakaTaka Ni Mali, has unveiled the Regional Circular Solutions Network, following the successful organization of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) Stakeholder Engagement, held under the theme “Waste to Wealth: Solutions for a Sustainable Future.”
The ISWA Engagement brought together 50 thought leaders and industry experts to delve into innovative approaches to waste management and circular economy initiatives.
Featuring insightful discussions and impactful presentations, the event aimed to tackle pressing environmental challenges and unlock opportunities for sustainable development across the East African region.
During the inaugural event in Nairobi, Mary Ngechu, the Founder of TakaTaka Ni Mali Foundation, emphasized Africa’s potential in waste management, noting that while the continent generates 80 percent of solid waste, only 11 percent is recycled, underscoring the untapped opportunities in the circular economy.
Mr. John Bosco Kalisa, Executive Director of the East African Business Council (EABC), stressed the importance of establishing a regional network within the East African Community (EAC) to promote the shift from linear to circular economy practices.
This transition aims to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the bloc in the global arena, with a recommendation for the adoption of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to ensure manufacturers take responsibility for their products’ environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
Mpendulo Ginindza, President of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA), shed light on the mission of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), advocating for partnerships to champion the green economy and achieve sustainability goals. Ginindza extended an invitation to join the historic ISWA 2024 World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, themed “Waste to Wealth: Solutions for a Sustainable Future.”
Distinguished speakers, including representatives from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), Global Compact Network Kenya, KPMG East Africa, Kenya Green Building Society, and KCB Bank, shared valuable insights on implementable systems, industrial opportunities, and regional collaboration strategies for driving sustainability in waste management and circular economy practices.
The event culminated in a significant MOU signing between TakaTaka Ni Mali Foundation and Safaricom PLC, signaling a commitment to collaborative efforts in sustainable waste management solutions.
In closing remarks, Kaye Matereke, Senior Partner at Tactive Consulting, underscored the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and advancing towards a sustainable future.
