Minister of Trade, Investment, and Industry, Rebecca Miano, has appointed Esther Njeri Ngari as the new Director-General of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
In an announcement published in the Official Government Gazette on October 13, 2023, Ms. Ngari will serve in this role for a period of three years.
“In accordance with the authority vested under Section 3 (1) of the Quality Standards Act, the Minister of Trade, Investment, and Industry has appointed Esther Njeri Ngari as the Director-General of KEBS for a term of three years, starting from October 13, 2023,” stated Ms. Miano.
Prior to her appointment, Ms. Ngari served as the Acting Director-General of the organization from May 18, 2023.

She assumed this position following the suspension of the former head of the institution, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Benard Njiraini, by President William Ruto.
Njiraini was among 27 officials from various government agencies who were suspended from duty in connection with the disappearance of 20,000 bags of contaminated sugar from the Kenya Revenue Authority’s warehouse in Mombasa.
The suspected intention behind this sugar, believed to have been sold in the market, was to use it in the production of industrial-grade ethanol.
Before her appointment as Acting Director-General of KEBS, Ms. Ngari served as the Director of Standards and Trade within the organization.
