Dickson Munyonyi, the veteran Mugithi singer who came to the limelight in 2021 with his three-decade old song Firirinda, has passed away.
Munyonyi died on Saturday morning while receiving treatment in a hospital in Kiambu County.
Munyonyi had been hospitalised, having been diagnosed with cancer months after he came to the limelight.
He had social media appeals through well wishers on social media, asking for financial support to offset his medical bills.
The singer came to the limelight at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when his song Firirinda became a national anthem among the young and old.
Interestingly, Firirinda was released 30 years ago. The unearthing of the song catapulted Munyonyi to the limelight, attracting even the interest of Music Copyright Society of Kenya Ezekiel Mutua.
Mutua said the board would take Munyonyi for physiotherapy to restore his voice chords.
He also called for financial help to get Munyonyi to hospital for treatment.
