Gachagua’s Latest 2027 Strategy Of Planting Allies to Counter His Mount Kenya Opponents

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is laying the groundwork for a major political offensive ahead of the 2027 general elections. By positioning key allies in strategic regions, Gachagua aims to cement his influence in Mount Kenya and beyond, setting the stage for a political realignment in the region.

In Othaya Constituency, Gachagua is said to be grooming Patrick Ngunjiri, also known as “Wakili Wa Mashambani,” to unseat incumbent MP Wambugu Wainaina. Ngunjiri, a lawyer with a strong grassroots presence, has cultivated a reputation as a champion for farmers.

Gachagua has reportedly identified Hon Sasha Ngima Wamae as the candidate to take on Faith Gitau for the Woman Representative seat. Political analysts note that Wamae’s youthful energy and her appeal to women and youth could provide a fresh alternative.

“Nyandarua politics have been shifting toward inclusivity and youth empowerment, and Gachagua seems to be tapping into this sentiment by endorsing Wamae,” observed political commentator Mark Bichachi.

In Nairobi’s Kasarani Constituency, Peter Wambugu (Pemwa) is reportedly being positioned to challenge incumbent MP Ronald Karauri. Pemwa’s grassroots connections and mobilization skills are viewed as key to his potential success in this urban constituency.

Gachagua’s plans for Laikipia County include backing Purity Kendi Gitonga against Jane Kagiri. Gitonga’s focus on rural development resonates with the county’s electorate, analysts say.

“By endorsing candidates like Kendi, Gachagua is trying to expand his influence beyond traditional strongholds and into areas where developmental politics are a priority,” said Prof. Julius Ndungu, a political scientist at Kenyatta University.

In Kiambu, Gachagua is backing Mercy Nungari Ndungu, who contested for Woman Representative in 2022 but fell short, to face Anne Wamuratha. Nungari’s track record in grassroots activism could make her a tough opponent.

In Murang’a, Gachagua has reportedly endorsed Wambui Nyutu to challenge incumbent Betty Maina. Analysts view Nyutu as part of a broader generational shift in leadership.

“Nyutu represents a younger, more dynamic brand of leadership, which Gachagua could be banking on to attract the youth vote,” said political analyst Martin Andati.

Sources have revealed that Gachagua has been holding private discussions with former MPs, including Peter Mwathi, Jude Njomo, Wainaina Jungle, Ngunjiri Wambugu, Gichuhi Mwangi, and Kabinga Wathayu. These meetings are seen as efforts to consolidate Mount Kenya leadership under his wing.

Political analysts suggest that Gachagua’s strategy is aimed at creating a loyal base of leaders who can rally support for his agenda.

“Gachagua is positioning himself as the undisputed kingpin of Mount Kenya, filling the void left by Uhuru Kenyatta. This is a high-stakes game, and success will depend on how well he balances competing interests in the region,” said Dr. Javas Bigambo, a political analyst.

However, not all analysts see this as a foolproof plan.

“Gachagua’s aggressive moves could alienate some leaders and voters, particularly if the incumbents push back with equally strong campaigns. It’s a risky strategy that could either consolidate his power or expose cracks in his influence,” warned political observer Elias Mutuma.

If successful, Gachagua’s maneuvers could significantly alter Mount Kenya’s political landscape. However, a misstep could weaken his standing and open the door for rivals to challenge his dominance.

“This is not just about 2027. Gachagua is laying the foundation for long-term political relevance. His ability to unify or divide Mount Kenya politics will determine his legacy,” Prof. Ndungu concluded.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Gachagua’s moves will be closely watched, with political observers keen to see how his chosen candidates fare in the high-stakes contest.
