Gakuya Leads Nairobi Gubernatorial Race as Sakaja’s Popularity Plummets, Says Microtrak Report

Renowned research firm, Microtrak Africa says if Nairobi gubernatorial elections were held today, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya would emerge victorious, according to a recent poll by Microtrak Africa.

The survey revealed Gakuya leading the race with 49% support from city residents, followed by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino at 40%. Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi ranked third with 5%, while incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja came in fourth with just 3%.

The poll indicated that Gakuya’s popularity stems from his consistent advocacy for hawkers’ rights and opposition to their eviction from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). Residents also cited his vocal stance on taxation policies as a key factor influencing their preference.

“Sakaja’s decision to restrict hawkers from the CBD and claims of arrogance and corruption have significantly hurt his popularity among voters,” the poll noted.

Babu Owino, who came second, gained support for his proactive engagement with constituents, while Tim Wanyonyi’s limited visibility in the gubernatorial conversation likely contributed to his lower ranking.

The survey highlights a shifting political landscape in Nairobi, with voters prioritizing leaders who address pressing issues like taxation and informal traders’ livelihoods.
