Late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru’s personal assistant survived the November 2017 road accident that killed the governor but a radio presenter announced him dead as he was fighting for his life at the hospital.
Albert Gakuru had accompanied Governor Gakuru for an interview on Kameme FM when the accident occurred at Makenji, Murang’a County.
He shared the name with the late Governor but they were not related.

The governor died while undergoing treatment at Thika. Albert, the driver and bodyguard escaped with serious injuries.
The presenter who worked in a vernacular radio station announced Albert dead alongside the Governor, causing distress to his wife and kins who had not been informed of the accident.
“When my sister heard about the accident from that presenter and that I was dead she fainted. My traumatised mother traveled from Nyeri to Aga Khan Hospital and stayed till late at night to see me being wheeled from theater to ascertain if I was alive or dead” Albert laments.
Adding; “The presenter is trusted by listeners so nothing could convince my mother otherwise until she saw me breathing although unconscious”.
Gakuru says the presenter who also hails from Nyeri was one of his closest friends, he frequently linked him up with the governor but it disturbed him why after the accident he quickly spread lies.

Albert lost fingers and was in coma for two days. He now works at Presidential Delivery Unit.
