For a stranger in the area, the swamp looks picturesque and harmless but behind the silent, calm waters is a shocking story.

The swamp is in Witeithie estate, which is between Juja and Thika.

Though the growth has provided some security in this neighbourhood, some years back that was not the case.

Area Chief James Gitau said when Witeithie was the hub of insecurity, a lot of ghastly things happened inside the swamp.

It was here dead bodies were found floating, many of them being victims of carjacking or robbery.

The other group of people killed and their bodies thrown here were as a result of land conflicts here, as mzee Mark Ndung’u narrated.

“Tussles in the land company led to murders. The swamp became the dumping place and robbers took advantage of this. Dumping bodies of carjacking victims, especially taxi operators. The estate was insecure” Ndung’u recalled.

According to Chief Gitau, the swamp is still feared because of past stories.

“The word Witeithie means help yourself. Though this was not the initial meaning, when insecurity became order of the day locals concocted the name to mean so. Even though security has been improved, there are some fears” he said.

“Even in daytime non-residents were mugged. Crooks took cover behind a hill that was flattened during the expansion of the highway. The estate went to sleep before 8.30pm” Martha Waithera, a resident said.

Mathew Mutua who operates bodaboda said the area is still feared, especially the swamp.

“You cannot cross that place late at night and there are customers we do not ferry towards that side when it is late at night” he said.

However, according to administration police at Witeithie chief’s camp, the estate is no longer to be feared as crime cases have gone down and it is no longer the hideout for criminals.
