Highway expert engineer and Makerere don succumbs to COVID-19

A lecturer and researcher at Makerere University, Eng. Dr. Godfrey Mwesigye has succumbed to coronavirus, the University has said.

Dr. Mwesigye, a Highway Safety/Transportation Engineering has died on Monday night after battling with Covid 19 for close to a month.

He was 43 years old.

“Its with a heavy heart and sadness to announce the passing on of our beloved brother and colleague Eng. Dr. Godfrey Mwesige. Dr. Mwesige battled with Covid 19 for close to a month until he passed on at the age of 43 years,” Dr . Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, Makerere University Academic Staff Association Chairman said.

Eng. Dr. Mwesige was a Lecturer in the Department of Construction Management which he joined in 2005.

Dr. Kamunyu said Eng. Dr. Mwesige was a MUASA member for close to 16 years.

“We are proud that this young, humble and brilliant man chose to use his youthful years to mentor young people”.

“Its very unfortunate that he has not been able to share the best of his mounting experience and knowledge as a transportation engineer as more as he could have wished to do”.

Kamunyu described Dr. Mwesige as a talented Transportation Engineer and mentor with total commitment to his work and a personal touch to his students.

“He never missed out on recognition for his work in highway safety and transportation in his professional and academic life”.

“We deeply condole with his young family at this time and pray to God almighty to comfort them”

“I kindly request you all to reach out to them in every way you can. Your positive gesture to the family at this moment means a lot to them as this loss is ours too. Its also deeply hurting and devastating to know that Eng. Dr. Mwesige was the only surviving child of his mother after the demise of his father and brother. We beseech God almighty to be the ultimate comforter of his family”.

“We also condole with his CEDAT family and all those colleagues who reached out to him, mobilized funds and prayed for him. Mwesige was in high spirits and was positive about his recovery but he could not make it. This time really requires us to reflect on what we all mean to each other as colleagues and the impact of our unified actions as children of God”.

He becames the second lecturer to die at the university in about five days after the university on July 1 lost Prof Noble Ephraim Banadda to Covid-19 at Case clinic, Kampala.
