Approximately 64km North of Nairobi County is a small but very active town known as Saba Saba, located just a few kilometers from Kenol town.

It’s popularly known for having many bars ,high number of odd businesses and weird street names such as Sodom, Sina bwana and Malaya road (prostitute road) that is just behind the town’s police station.

The town has about 36-40 bars despite its small radius and about 10 lodgings where most locals enjoy their “sweat” and land brokers congregate as they plot their next ‘kill”.

A recent article by a local daily stated that the tallest building has two floors and the rent for a single room goes for between Ksh 200 and Ksh 2000 while a double one will cost you about Ksh 2500 inclusive of electricity.

The cost of lodging ranges between Ksh 200 and Ksh 500 per night and locals claim that the town glory has been stolen by the fast-rising Kenol town.

The centre is also known for the high sale of bhang which has since escalated as the area OCS was recently transferred after arresting the son of a powerful leader.

This didn’t go down well with locals as they accused the leader of using her position to intimidate hardworking officers at the expense of heightened insecurity.

Despite the questionable reputation, this is the hometown to Maragua MP Mary Waithira Njoroge popularly known as Wamaua, her husband, Maua (flowers) who is a renowned mechanic.

Maragua MP Mary Waithira “Wamaua”.

The ground floor of their house acts as a business park and a garage while they stay on the first floor that faces the Murang’a-Kenol road.

Maua garage is just opposite honey pot building that is owned by the late businessman Gicungi and near Air coast hardware.

Before Mary Waithira became MP, she used to be a teacher at Saba Saba primary school as well as Maganjo primary.

A familiar source who sought anonymity and spoke to Opera News said that the MP, alias Wamaua, resigned from teaching after she was demoted from a deputy head teacher to class a three teacher during the Moi era.

The source disclosed that she had fraudulently been promoted noting that it was during Moi’s reign when job groups were created at the Teachers Service Commission, so classroom teachers would ascend the ladder to job group R without necessarily following the right protocols.

This saw a lot of teachers being promoted. Later an audit was done and thousands who were demoted weren’t ready to face the shame.

Wamaua resigned and enrolled at KIHBIT in Kisii between 2008-2009 where she registered for a diploma in civil works specializing in roads construction.

Thereafter, she enrolled at Gretsa University for a bachelor degree in community works before she fully started road construction jobs in the larger Maragua constituencies.

All this time, her husband Maua was still operating their garage and was being contracted by then Maragua municipality to repair its vehicles.

In 2013, Wamaua contested for Murang’a County woman representative seat alongside but list to the charismatic Sabina Chege.

She however lobbied and was nominated as a member of Murang’a County Assembly until 2017 when she vied for Maragua parliamentary seat under the Jubilee Party ticket.

 She won.

All this time, she was living in Saba Saba town with her family.

A source further hinted that since she was elected, she has bought a house at a village known as Wathiani that belonged to late Saba Saba secondary school teacher Mr Githiga and also a huge chunk of land at Njumbi, still within the locality.

It’s also claimed that the MP has an ongoing project that involves the construction of rental houses at Kaharati at a disputed land that was sold by the Murang’a County government under unclear circumstances.

The MP’s husband is alleged to have gotten a tender to repair County vehicles but recently lost after she disagreed with the Governor Mwangi wa Iria politically.

MP Wamaua’s husband is a mechanic.

“Maua is known to be a very humble man, if you happen to take your vehicle to his garage, he will repair it himself and if busy, he will delegate to his staff, he has maintained his humble background even after his wife became an MP,” the source told Opera News.

He noted that the husband has been mobilizing locals to support the wife in every project she launches.
