How Schools Can Play a Vital Role in Promoting Children’s Dental Hygiene

By Dr. Muffadal Shokat Oral health plays a crucial role in a child’s overall well-being, yet it is often neglected. Good dental hygiene is not only about having a bright smile; it is essential for preventing cavities, gum disease, and other serious health issues. Raising awareness about oral health in children can help establish lifelong habits that promote better health and boost confidence. Poor oral hygiene can lead to pain, infections, and difficulty in eating and speaking, which in turn can affect a child’s academic performance. Studies have shown that children with untreated dental problems are more likely to miss school due to discomfort or illness, impacting both their learning and social interactions. By educating children on the importance of brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups, schools can help prevent these issues and foster a healthier learning environment. Incorporating oral health education into school curriculums is an effective way to encourage good habits from an early age. Interactive activities, workshops, and dental awareness campaigns can teach children the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene. Schools can also partner with dental professionals to offer free check-ups and provide guidance on proper oral care. The Nairobi West Hospital runs a daily dental wellness clinic to support children’s oral health and guide them on how to maintain it. The consultation fee is KES 1,050. Additionally, the hospital offers free online resources to help parents care for their children’s oral health. In addition to brushing and flossing, children should be taught how diet impacts their oral health. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks can prevent tooth decay, while consuming calcium-rich foods strengthens teeth and gums. Encouraging these habits early on will ensure children develop a strong foundation for lifelong oral health. The writer is Resident Physician, The Nairobi West Hospital
