IEBC Allocated Sh8.8bn To Sufficiently Prepare For August 9 Polls

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been allocated an additional Sh8.8 billion, after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law, the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation bill.

The cash, 8,813,903,557, is set to enable the electoral body, “sufficiently prepare for the August 9th polls.”

Kenya is set to hold the general elections when President Uhuru Kenyatta’s successor will be elected.

The President has served the two constitutionally allowed terms.

IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati had on August 9, 2021, announced that the commission requires at least Sh40.9 billion to carry out credible elections.

He added that the commission needs Sh588 million to procure Covid-19 items.

The electoral body had earlier asked Parliament to allocate Sh13 billion in the supplementary budget to meet the shortfall needed to conduct the polls.

The IEBC had already received Sh14.5 billion in the current financial year, out of which Sh2.2 billion was set aside for anticipated court petitions after the polls.
