IEBC gazettes symbols of 38 independent presidential candidates cleared for August polls

The electoral body has gazetted thirty-eight symbols of independent presidential candidates cleared for the August 9, State House race alongside 108 independent gubernatorial aspirants.

The symbols that range from shovels, painkiller tablets and running athletes shall be used by the candidates seeking to be elected to different elective positions.

“IEBC gives notice to the public that the persons listed… have submitted their symbols and expressed intention to contest as independent candidates for the General Election to be held on August 9, 2022 and are required to present themselves to the respective Returning Officer,” read the gazette notice.

IEBC picks new CEO

Three-time presidential candidate Nazlin Umar is among the thirty-eight independent candidates cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC).

Umar has been vying unsuccessfully three times, with the 2022 poll being her fourth time.

Interestingly, presidential aspirant Paul Kigame and a section of other independent candidates will be working together to form a coalition under Taifa la Fursa Forum.

The 38 candidates will now be expected to present themselves to IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, the Returning Officer for the presidential election, to scrutinise their nominations, after which Chebukati will advise on whether they are qualified to be listed on the ballot for the August 9 presidential election or not.

The IEBC’s move comes a few days after the Registrar of Political Parties said it had a list of forty-seven candidates who had successfully reversed symbols.
