The IEBC selection panel was officially sworn in on Monday 27 January 2025 in a ceremony led by Chief Justice Hon. Martha Koome.
This follows a High Court ruling made on Friday 24 January 2025 which lifted the earlier stay order that has been hindering their appointment.
The nine member panel comprising of Kiome Lindah Gakii, Oloo Adams, James Evans Misati, Nicodemus Kipchirchir Bore, Koki Muli Grignon, Carolene Kituku, Tanui Andrew Kipkoech, Nelson Makanda and Fatuma Saman is commissioned to select nominees for the Chairperson and members of IEBC positions.
Speaking during the ceremony, the CJ emphasized the importance of integrity, transparency, diligence and fairness among the members and urged them to remain steadfast upholding the constitution.
She also noted that their decisions would greatly shape not just the 2027 elections but the future of the country’s democracy
“The oath you have taken today is a solemn pledge to serve Kenya with unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution. The decisions you make will shape not just the 2027 elections, but the future of our democracy.
“Rise to this occasion with honour, patriotism, and a deep sense of duty. Let this process be a beacon of integrity, setting a standard for all institutions to follow,” the Chief Justice added.
On the other hand, the Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Moses Wetangula has directed the Clerk of the Senate and Secretary to the Parliamentary Service Commission Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye to ensure all necessary logistical and financial support to facilitate the panel’s mandate.
Recognizing the urgency, he further noted the commitment of the parliament to ensure the panel operates smoothly given it’s national purpose.
