Despite allies of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja finding relief, cracks within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the power struggle between the rival factions of the party pose a threat to his leadership in the capital city.
On Tuesday, Sakaja’s associates found relief after the Political Parties Disputes Resolution Tribunal suspended the implementation of leadership changes made by UDA.
This came after Sakaja’s allies, including Antony Kiragu, the minority leader in the county assembly, and the minority whip, Mark Mugambi, filed a request asking the tribunal to halt the implementation of these changes.

The tribunal’s chair, Desma Nungo, issued an interim order to halt UDA and the Nairobi County Assembly from implementing the decision, pending the hearing and determination of the request. The case will be mentioned on November 7, 2023, at 8:30 AM for further directions.
This development comes just a day after the UDA party Secretary-General, Cleophas Malala, through a press statement, nominated South Nairobi MCA Waithera Chege to replace Kiragu, with Joyce Muthoni taking over from Umoja One MCA Mark Mugambi. Both Kiragu and Mugambi were removed on allegations of failing to unite UDA ward representatives.
Waithera led the ward representatives in the signature collection process to oust the two from office. Additionally, the councilors stated that the two leaders failed to adequately represent them in the assembly and accused them of misappropriation.
In addition to their association with Sakaja, Kiragu and his counterpart have been collaborating with him professionally.
