The government is set to adopt new technology to curb document forgery and streamline digital verification processes, ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has announced.

Speaking after a meeting with a delegation from the Indian government, led by Anish Kumar, an advisor to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Kabogo stated that Kenya is ready to leverage technology-sharing opportunities to drive digital transformation in a cost-effective manner.

“The Ministry of Information, Communications & The Digital Economy is in the process of tapping into a technological platform that can be used to verify documents such as certificates in real-time, eliminating forgery,” said Kabogo.

The Indian government has already implemented a similar initiative through the ‘DigiLocker’ platform, which allows digital document storage and verification. Kenya is working with a multi-sectoral team, including different ministries and stakeholders, to ensure the system aligns with local laws and is fit for purpose.

Kabogo emphasized that document fraud remains a pressing issue and that technology will help cut down the time and resources currently spent on manual verification.

The partnership stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Kenya and India in December 2023, aimed at unlocking technological opportunities for both nations.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, Mary Kerema, Secretary ICT E-Government and Digital Economy, and other senior government officials.
