The Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority (KHPOA), under the leadership of Chair Dr. Amit Thakker, pledged on Thursday, April 11, 2024, to uphold professionalism and ethical standards in the health sector to safeguard citizens’ well-being.

KHPOA affirmed its collaboration with health sector unions and the Ministry of Health to oversee regulations, uphold standards, and ensure quality service delivery.

During a consultative meeting in Nairobi addressing healthcare system gaps, Dr. Thakker underscored the importance of trained health workers in delivering quality care and safeguarding lives.

“We are committed to enhancing the conduct and ethical practices of health professionals across both public and private institutions to guarantee all citizens receive top-tier healthcare,” stated Dr. Thakker.

Additionally, plans are in motion for KHPOA to conduct visits to hospitals and training facilities to verify the qualifications of health practitioners and trainers, aiming to eradicate quackery in the sector.

Dr. Thakker outlined KHPOA’s mandate to oversee healthcare services, training, registration, and licensing of health professionals, emphasizing the importance of compliance with professional standards and ethical codes.

This oversight aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 goal of becoming a middle-income country with a high quality of life for its citizens.

Ensuring an efficient, reliable, and high-quality healthcare delivery system is a key focus for KHPOA, aiming to enhance the overall patient experience.

Furthermore, Dr. Thakker stressed the enforcement of professional conduct and ethical practice by health regulatory bodies, promoting respect for human rights and dignity in healthcare settings.

KHPOA is dedicated to resolving complaints and appeals related to healthcare institutions or regulatory bodies, ensuring every person’s right to file a complaint and have it investigated appropriately.

Dr. Thakker emphasized the strict observance of the right to emergency medical treatment, with sanctions for facilities or professionals withholding or delaying treatment in emergency situations.

“The Authority is committed to upholding the right to emergency medical treatment, and any violation will be met with appropriate actions,” clarified Dr. Thakker.
