The Kikuyu Council of Elders has appealed to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu counterpart Ndindi Nyoro, urging them to reconcile for the sake of regional unity.
Wachira Kiago, the council’s national chairman, highlighted the importance of Gachagua and Ndindi collaborating, expressing concerns about growing divisions in the Mount Kenya region leading up to the 2027 general election.
Kiago speculated that external forces might be working to undermine Gachagua, aiming to weaken the Mount Kenya region and create political instability.
While offering to mediate a truce between the two leaders, the council also called on them to form a cohesive coalition and unite the region, which appears divided since the 2022 general election.
“We are ready to facilitate a truce between Gachagua and Ndindi Nyoro if it exists, but we urge them to establish a unified coalition to unite the community, which still seems divided since the previous 2022 general election,” said Kiago.
Emphasizing that Mount Kenya elders would not tolerate the community being exploited for political purposes, Kiago asserted that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, as one of the senior politicians in the region, should be respected for guiding the community on its next political steps.
He called on Mount Kenya leaders to unite and form a regional party before the 2027 elections to advance the interests of the people.
These statements followed an endorsement of Ndindi Nyoro as a potential running mate to President William Ruto by some Mount Kenya leaders.
However, President Ruto cautioned against engaging in succession politics and emphasized working with Deputy President Gachagua to mentor youth in the ruling United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA).
Ruto encouraged aspiring leaders to focus on delivering services to the electorate and implementing the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, discouraging them from participating in current or future contests.
He stated, “The deputy president and I have a plan. We said we will give mentorship to these young leaders in UDA. They, however, need to slow down because if they speed up, they will spoil things.”
Gachagua, echoing similar sentiments, had previously called for unity among Mount Kenya leaders, discouraging divisive politics and promoting greater youth involvement in socio-economic activities.
He denounced a political scheme to divide the Mount Kenya region voting bloc, asserting that the schemers would not succeed in their mission.
