The move by former Mungiki leader, Mr. Maina Njenga, urging Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) to form a political alliance has raised questions about whether this strategy is a new way for the two to oust Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the political leader of Mount Kenya.

On Wednesday, Mr. Njenga stated that he is ready to “collaborate with Mr. Nyoro to liberate the Mount Kenya region by bringing equality in its leadership.”

Mr. Maina made this statement in an interview with a radio station, stating that “the time has come for the political voice of this region to be heard again.”

Commending Nyoro for the efforts he has been making to enhance his leadership position in the region, Mr. Maina expressed his readiness to join forces with the MP and other supporting legislators “to liberate the locals.”

“If I can meet with Mr. Nyoro today, I can buy him tea,” Mr. Njenga said.

In the interview, Mr. Njenga supported recent complaints by leaders from Murang’a County, stating that the county has never produced a President or Deputy President in the Central region, and it is time for it to do so.

These leaders, led by Senator Joe Nyutu (Murang’a), argued that the primary goal of pushing for Nyoro’s nomination as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 general elections is to ensure that Murang’a County experiences national leadership.

“We urge Dr. Ruto to appoint Mr. Nyoro as his running mate in 2027 because, after speaking to our people, we have found that he is the most popular leader at the moment,” Nyutu said.

According to political analysts, these two directions pose a significant political threat to Gachagua, as the motivation behind these leaders is dissatisfaction with his leadership.

“The open emergence of these two leaders should politically unsettle Gachagua because both of them are gaining popularity and some political influence. Njenga is highly popular among the youth, while Nyoro is also rising to fame among the youth. His impressive development record in his Kiharu constituency has also elevated his political standing in the country,” said Mark Bichachi, a political analyst.

He suggests that even though these two leaders are in different political factions – Azimio and Kenya Kwanza – they are united by a common goal: to create a new political direction and voice for Mount Kenya.

“Undoubtedly, despite these two leaders being in different political factions, they are united by their goal to create a new direction on the mountain. It’s a situation that should make Gachagua uneasy about his political future,” Bichachi said.
