A matatu conductor plying the City Cabanas and Ruai bypass route survived a beating by irate passengers after he attempted to throw out an elderly woman who did not have an extra Sh20 fare.
The woman who had come from Makueni County was heading to Utawala when she boarded the matatu along Mombasa Road from Wote.
As the conductor started collecting fare, the granny in her 70s handed over the only money she had on her. The conductor took the cash and shouted at her: “Ongeza shilingi ishirini hapa mama, gari ni shilingi sabini.” Meaning the bus fare was Sh70.
Pleas by the granny that she only had the Sh50 fell on deaf ears; but the conductor was adamant that she must top up the amount.
The granny started crying as the conductor threatened to eject her from the matatu before her destination at Benedicta stage.
“You can’t do this to an elderly woman. She is your grandmother’s age and if you continue harassing her, we shall beat you,” one of the passengers charged.
The driver of the vehicle was forced to pull over as more and more passengers joined in the fray threatening to discipline the conductor over his disrespect to the elderly woman.
One of the passengers volunteered to top up the Sh20 for the granny’s fare.
