Long-time comedian and former South Imenti parliamentary aspirant, MC Jessy, has revealed the exorbitant costs of running for any political office.
During a live interview with bloggers, the comedian shared insights into the challenges faced during the 2022 political campaigns, despite ultimately losing the election.
“I was up against a 71-year-old man who had attempted to win this seat for four consecutive terms without success. Honestly, this seat cost me over 58 million Kenyan Shillings. South Imenti has many areas, which forced us to have 12 vehicles…
Each vehicle crisscrossed, canvassing from morning till evening. The fuel prices were exceptionally high, and each vehicle had a campaigner who would sell my policies to the locals. They all expected their evening pay. In a single day, we would spend over three hundred thousand Kenyan Shillings,” MC Jessy stated.
MC Jessy explained that on a daily basis, his vehicles, along with his campaign team, including the campaign manager, would spend over 50,000 Kenyan Shillings per vehicle when they reached areas to launch their policies to the residents of South Imenti constituency.
The comedian also discussed Bahati, a candidate for the Mathare parliamentary seat, acknowledging that he was the one who introduced him to the UDA party. Bahati also revealed that he spent over 27 million Kenyan Shillings in his bid for the Mathare MP seat, despite both of them losing.
