Deputy Governor of Trans Nzoia, Philomena Kapkory, continues to face challenges after Governor George Natembeya defended himself before the Senate and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) when questioned about their differences.

Mr. Natembeya, whose relationship with the Deputy Governor deteriorated in October, told the Senate Devolution Committee and the NCIC that the allegations against him by Ms. Kapkory are politically motivated.

Mr. Natembeya urged Ms. Kapkory to substantiate her claims, further escalating the rift between the two.

Last week, Governor Natembeya defended himself, claiming that his deputy aimed to tarnish his reputation.

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have now given Ms. Kapkory one month to apologize to the governor, or they will initiate impeachment proceedings against her.

Other MCAs blame Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau and Senator Allan Chesang for funding divisive politics to undermine Governor Natembeya’s administration.

MCAs, led by minority leader Erick Wafula, who represents Hospital Ward, threatened to oust Ms. Kapkory if she does not apologize.

“We know who is funding the Deputy Governor to tarnish Governor Natembeya’s name. Even when we went to Nairobi when the Governor was defending himself, we saw how the senator tried to humiliate our team. He (the senator) should be ready to face us here at home,” said Mr. Wafula.

Mr. Wafula and his counterpart from Sikhendu Ward, Mr. Andrew Kutitila, also warned Kiminini MP Bisau against conspiring against Governor Natembeya.

It is alleged that Mr. Bisau leans towards the party of the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Ford Kenya, and plans to use it to challenge Mr. Natembeya in the 2027 general elections.

Last week, Mr. Bisau and Cherangany MP Patrick Simiyu declared their allegiance to Speaker Wetang’ula at Kitale National Polytechnic during a football tournament sponsored by Senator Chesang.

These two leaders were elected on the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) ticket, but lately, the party’s leader, Mr. Eugene Wamalwa, has criticized them for lack of loyalty.

The conflict in Trans-Nzoia is reminiscent of the 2017-2022 scenario when the former West Pokot Governor, Prof. John Lonyangapuo, operated independently after falling out with the then Deputy Governor, Dr. Nicholas Atudonyang, who returned to the United States to pursue his medical career.
