Susan Nyambura, a certified referee has proven to be a jack of all trades by succeeding in Athletics and making it to the national team.
Nyambura has been juggling refereeing and athletics for a while as she officiates second-tier soccer league and national super league and trained under her athletics coach, Perpetual Mbutu.
She indicated that the transition from being a referee to an athlete wasn’t difficult since referees are supposed to be physically fit when chasing the ball movements in the pitch.
She was poached in 2017 by sprint coach, George Macharia while she was training on her speed work under her instructor Stephen Owuor.
“I went to Kasarani Stadium and coach Macharia saw me training and after the session, he asked me to join athletics because I looked good in the sprints,” Nyambura stated.
She turned down his offer at the time but in 2018 she took up the challenge and she hasn’t regretted it ever since.
“I wondered why the coach had insisted on me joining athletics. Referee David Gikonyo told me that coach Macharia had asked him to talk to me about trying my hand in athletics. I’m now enjoying the sport” she remarked.
Macharia introduced her to Coach Stephen Mwaniki who engaged her in serious training at the Kenya Prisons Service.
She was the best civilian in the 100-metre race and attained second place in the 200-metre race at the 2019 Kenya Prisons Athletics Championships.
She made her debut in the international athletic in the 2021 World Athletics Relay Championships in Silesia, Poland. She was the assistant captain for the 4 x 200 meters relay team.
Nyambura has set her targets high as she aims for 11.15 seconds for 100m race and 22.8 seconds for 200m race as she anticipated 2022 World Athletics championships.
The trained referee is seeking to break the record in the upcoming 2022 Africa Senior Athletics Championship in Mauritius which will be held from June 8 to 12 and the Commonwealth games In Birmingham, the United Kingdom, from August 2 to 7.
