Mount Kenya University honored Karim Khan, President William Ruto’s lawyer, by awarding him an honorary doctorate during their 23rd graduation ceremony on August 4, 2023.
Khan played a pivotal role as the lead lawyer when both Ruto and Uhuru were tried at The Hague for the post-election violence of 2007/2008. The announcement of the honorary doctorate for Khan was made public through a notice released by the university.
The awarding ceremony was presided over by University Chancellor John Struthers, who conferred Degrees and award Diplomas and Certificates. Distinguished guests, including the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, also grace the event.

Khan nomination for an Honorary Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) was to acknowledge his remarkable contributions to the rule of law and international justice. His appointment as the International Criminal Court Prosecutor in June 2021, succeeding Fatou Bensouda, further highlights his legal prowess.
Notably, Khan showcased his exceptional skills when he represented President Ruto during the 2017 post-election violence case at The Hague. Beyond his role as Ruto’s lawyer, Khan has also served as an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, holding the prestigious position of the first Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team.
