Moja EVs has launched the first zero-mileage electric vehicles (EVs) for the taxi and corporate cab segment in Kenya, marking a significant step towards a greener future. This initiative will initially benefit drivers under organized associations and Saccos.

During a meeting with taxi drivers across the country, Annette Githinji, the company’s marketing executive, highlighted that the 2023 model can accommodate five passengers. She noted that the EVs have a fast charging time of 30 minutes from 30 to 80 percent and come with two chargers and a 14.6-inch touchscreen.

Ken Onyango, the head of operations, stated that the introduction of zero-mileage EVs will revolutionize the transportation sector by offering affordable, safe, and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

“This significant milestone is not only an advancement for the taxi and corporate cab segment but also an essential move towards sustainable development and environmental conservation,” he said.

Ryan Kangundo, the executive director of the Digital Transport Federation, emphasized the federation’s support for reducing the carbon footprint in the transport sector.

“The uptake is very high in terms of adoption. The federation embraces this transition because it aligns with the climate act and the clean energy initiative,” Kangundo said.

This initiative aims to positively impact the livelihoods of drivers in the ride-hailing marketplace by providing modern, efficient vehicles that reduce operational costs and enhance earning potential.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduced Operating Costs: Electric vehicles have lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to traditional vehicles, allowing drivers to save more and increase their net earnings.
  • Enhanced Safety: Advanced safety features in EVs provide better protection for drivers and passengers, contributing to safer rides and reducing accident-related expenses.
  • Increased Demand: The eco-friendly nature of EVs can attract more customers who prefer green transportation options, potentially increasing ride-hailing requests and income for drivers.
  • Long-term Financial Stability: By lowering operational expenses and providing more reliable vehicles, drivers can achieve greater financial stability and resilience in their livelihoods.

This initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing Moja EVs’ commitment to creating a more sustainable and equitable future:

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy: Promotes the use of clean energy solutions through the adoption of electric vehicles, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and encouraging the use of renewable energy sources.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities: By integrating electric vehicles into urban transportation, it contributes to the development of sustainable urban transport systems, reducing pollution, and enhancing the quality of life in cities.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action: The shift to electric vehicles significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping mitigate climate change and supporting global efforts to protect the planet.
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being: By reducing emissions and improving air quality, this initiative contributes to better public health, decreasing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases linked to air pollution.
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: Supports economic growth by creating new opportunities within the green economy sector. It empowers drivers by providing them with modern, efficient, and cost-effective vehicles, fostering economic resilience and development.

As Moja EVs embarks on this journey towards a sustainable future, it looks forward to continued collaboration and support from all stakeholders. Together, they can drive positive change, enhance safety, reduce the carbon footprint, and promote a healthier, more sustainable environment for current and future generations.

Moja EVs’ initiative is supported by driver community associations under the County Government of Nairobi, the National Transport and Safety Authority, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSME Development, in collaboration with the green energy entity.
