“Wacha niwaambie sisi watu wa Mlima kama si huyu mungwana ingetuchukua miaka 100 kuvunja nyororo ya wale wachache ambao walikuwa wanafikiria hatutaongoza taifa,” Kuria said.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria now says that one of the major reasons he opted to support Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential bid is because the UDA leader allegedly liberated the Mt. Kenya region from political oppression.

According to Kuria, by seeking to contest for the presidency without President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backing, the DP has dispelled a notion ingrained in the psyche of most Kenyans that claims only a handful of individuals, from politically connected wealthy families, are qualified enough to lead the nation.

Kuria was speaking on Tuesday during UDA’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) held at Kasarani stadium.

“Wacha niwaambie sisi watu wa Mlima kama si huyu mungwana ingetuchukua miaka 100 kuvunja nyororo ya wale wachache ambao walikuwa wanafikiria hatutaongoza taifa,” Kuria said.

“You have made it possible for me, an MP of the president, to take a different path from a sitting president without fear and for me, that is very important. We owe you the debt of gratitude for liberating us.”

Kuria likewise stated that he will back DP Ruto owing to the fact that the UDA frontman is a good-natured person who keeps his word, a trait the legislator says is quite rare among politicians.

According to Kuria, the last time he supported a favourably disposed politician was when he supported retired president Mwai Kibaki during his time at State House.

“You might be a good leader, politician and party leader but one thing I am sure you are a good human being and that makes a big difference. Supporting a good human being is more important than supporting a good leader because we can take your word,” said Kuria.

The Gatundu legislator reiterated that the DP has a proven track record of effectively leading the country independently, highlighting that Ruto seamlessly assumed all duties of the Commander-in-Chief when President Kenyatta was summoned to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2014 where he was facing charges of crimes against humanity.

The charges, which were later dismissed concerned President Kenyatta’s alleged role in the violence that followed the 2007 elections.

“Wengine wanasema ati DP hawawezi kumuamini, jamani mnakumbuka wakati Rais wetu alienda hague akamuacha DP as an acting president. Alirudi na akarudishiwa all the powers. Niwaulize jameni kama ni Raila Odinga Uhuru alipotoka Hague urais angeuonea viusasa,” he said.

Kuria similarly lauded Ruto for allegedly unifying the country by incorporating leaders from different parts of the country under his Kenya Kwanza Alliance outfit and for advocating for devolution and a different economic model he claims will see the less fortunate in society given priority in matters development.

The aforementioned reasons, Kuria said, also drew him to DP Ruto’s camp.

In a statement that likely alluded to what the Gatundu South legislator is hoping to gain by joining DP Ruto, Kuria opined that he believes the UDA leader is the perfect candidate to revolutionise the Council of Governor’s role in the country’s administration.

Kuria has expressed interest in competing for Kiambu County’s governor seat at the August polls.

“As the incoming chair of the council of governors. I know you will do everything to strengthen the council of governors and to make it truly the fourth arm of government,” he said.
