Murang’a County Woman Representative, Betty Maina, has alleged the emergence of ‘greedy politicians’ in the Mt. Kenya region. She criticized these politicians for their insatiable appetite for power, even though they already hold significant authority.

Speaking in Karugia during the funeral of Mrs. Beth Wambui, Ms. Maina remarked, “We are in a dire situation with these politicians who, despite having authority within their grasp, are still crying out for more power.”

Ms. Maina, popularly known as ‘Betty e sawa’ (Betty is okay), said, “Those who are currently in the field seeking more power are as greedy as hyenas.”

“Other communities are puzzled by our complaints, seeing us as already benefitting greatly from the government. When they hear us constantly demanding more, they perceive us as perpetually dissatisfied,” she added.

Ms. Maina stated that President William Ruto is under pressure despite his efforts to reward the region significantly due to the 87% of votes he received from them.

“If you ask me my stance on these politics, I would say that Mt. Kenya leaders need to be content. We should stop being overly self-centered and instead appreciate the blessings we have. We must remain loyal to President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, giving them the space to lead us in fulfilling the promises made by the Kenya Kwanza alliance,” she said.

Currently, Mt. Kenya politics have splintered into factions, with some demanding more development funds, others eyeing the presidency and deputy presidency in the 2027 elections, and some seeking more constituencies and government positions.

This situation has turned the region into a hotspot for controversial headlines, especially with Deputy President Gachagua’s remarks being contested, Azimio supporters intensifying their campaigns, and President Ruto’s allies defending him against criticism.

Ms. Maina concluded that if Mt. Kenya leaders reduce their excessive self-interest and recognize that they are part of a larger Kenyan community, there will be greater equity.

“We in Mt. Kenya should understand that other citizens from different regions are also waiting for the promises of 2022 to be fulfilled. We need to curb this greed and excessive desire,” she urged.
