“Former Gatanga MP, Mr. Nduati Ngugi, has advised Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on how to navigate the political turbulence within the government. Ngugi outlined four options for Gachagua’s survival amidst the speculated strain on his political alliances.
He suggested that Gachagua either assert his authority within the government to combat the challenges, confront President Ruto to remove dissenters from the administration, exit and form an opposition targeting the 2027 presidential election, or remain within the government and align with the Azimio coalition to oust Ruto in 2027.
Those close to Gachagua, including Budget Committee Chairman Ndindi Nyoro, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Public Service Minister Moses Kuria, and Council of Governors Chair Anne Waiguru, have hinted at their dissatisfaction with Gachagua’s leadership and his potential candidacy alongside Ruto in 2027.
Ngugi warned Gachagua that even in the face of adversity, President Ruto might not dismiss him to avoid constitutional conflicts arising from their shared political ticket.
However, voluntarily stepping down would significantly diminish Gachagua’s influence, opportunities, and international networks crucial for his presidential ambitions.
Ngugi highlighted the evident political turmoil surrounding Gachagua, with indications of external influence, particularly from Rift Valley politicians, impacting Mount Kenya’s political landscape.
“Kwa hivyo, Bw Gachagua ana hakikisho kwamba anaweza akadumu ofisini hadi 2027 lakini pia akiwa na ruhusa ya kujitoa kwa hiari,” alisema Bw Ngugi.
Despite Gachagua’s assertions of unity with his superiors, remarks by allies like Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga suggest internal discord. Kahiga lamented the apparent marginalization of Mount Kenya despite its significant contribution to the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
He accused Rift Valley politicians of undermining Mount Kenya’s political interests, a sentiment echoed by North Embakasi MP James Gakuya.
According to Ngugi, Gachagua’s political missteps, particularly his divisive rhetoric against political stakeholders, have inadvertently positioned him as a regional rather than a national leader, exacerbating his current predicament.
Ngugi cautioned Mount Kenya residents against blindly supporting Gachagua’s challenges, as they could directly impact the region’s future political strategies for the 2027 and 2032 elections.
He urged Mount Kenya communities to foster unity and hold Gachagua accountable for his actions to ensure a cohesive approach in future elections.”
