It was a relentless push by the media that finally compelled Multiple Hauliers East Africa Limited, a debt-ridden logistics firm, to settle its arrears with a former employee.
Duncan Oyugi, who had worked with the company for 18 years, received SH1.3 million in overdue payments after persistent media pressure.
Oyugi, who left the company in December 2022, faced significant challenges in securing his rightful pay.
Despite numerous attempts to claim his arrears, he was met with obstacles until he reached out to The Nairobian newspaper, which runs the advocacy page “The Nairobian Defender.”
The Nairobian Defender, part of The Standard Media Group, is dedicated to championing the causes of citizens facing injustice.
Oyugi’s case was taken up by the desk in January 2023, leading to intensive follow-ups and media exposés under the “Case Tracks” initiative.
The media scrutiny finally prompted action from the company’s management. Managing Director Rajinder Singh Baryan intervened, and by October of the previous year, Multiple Hauliers began paying Oyugi in monthly installments of SH150,000. The full amount was cleared last month.
“I am now relieved. I thought I would lose that money,” Oyugi told the newspaper, expressing his satisfaction with the resolution.
This case highlights the vital role of media in advocating for individuals’ rights and ensuring justice, especially in matters involving financial disputes and corporate accountability.
