In an effort to combat the menace of alcohol abuse, especially among the youth, the Murang’a County Government has unveiled comprehensive plans spearheaded by its Deputy Speaker, Hon. Gachui Mungai. Speaking on Sunday evening during the Inooro show, Hon. Gachui outlined the strategies designed to curb the proliferation of illicit brews that have plagued the region.

The Deputy Speaker highlighted the establishment of three specialized committees focusing on youth affairs, trade, and health. These committees have been tasked with drafting regulations aimed at controlling, regulating, streamlining, and harmonizing the sale, licensing, and trade of alcohol in the county.

“Liquor trade is just like any other trade, but what we are fighting is the illicit alcohol that has turned some of our youth into zombies. This is totally unacceptable,” Hon. Gachui emphasized.

Acknowledging the unwavering commitment of Governor Irungu Kangata in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse, Hon. Gachui expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support and leadership in addressing this critical issue.

The initiative comes at a time when alcohol abuse, particularly among the youth, has been on the rise, leading to numerous health and social challenges. Illicit brews, in particular, pose significant health risks and contribute to anti-social behavior, affecting the well-being and future prospects of the younger generation.

Hon. Gachui Mungai, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kihumbu-ini ward in Gatanga Constituency, is well-positioned to drive this initiative forward. Currently serving his third consecutive term, his experience and dedication to public service are evident in his proactive approach to addressing the pressing issues faced by the community.

The unveiling of these plans underscores the county government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its residents and creating a conducive environment for growth and development. With the support of Governor Irungu Kangata and the collaborative efforts of the specialized committees, Murang’a County is poised to make significant strides in the war against illicit liquor abuse.
