Nairobi Nyumba Kumi members will soon be trained on how to handle fire outbreaks and emergencies.

This is after Member of County Assembly for Mlango Kubwa Patricia Mutheu tabled a motion that will help curb the scope of damage caused by repetitive fires in the markets and informal settlements by ensuring measures are put in place and Nyumba Kumi leaders trained how to handle the disasters.

“This assembly urges the County executive to urgently take measures to identify, train and equip Nyumba Kumi members and volunteers with necessary skills and equipment appropriate to respond to fire and emergencies in Nairobi County especially the formal settlements where rescue services take longer to respond,” she said in a statement.

The MCA urged that they be equipped with fire extinguishers so that they can act first to the emergency outbreaks.

She decried of having several fire outbreaks repeatedly in her ward with the County fire engines taking long to arrive at the scenes leaving many people injured, Property lost, and even lives being lost.

Mutheu further assured that even the markets like Gikomba which has been having inferno cases every month will only be catered for if the motion is passed and implemented.

“I have seen families incurring a lot of losses due to inferno outbreaks because they did not know how to put off the fire. The only this that is always available to them is water which never puts off the fire. It’s always sad seeing money paid to maize millers for them to be given flour but what about their valuable documents burnt and dead family members?” an emotional Mutheu questioned.

The motion comes after Gikomba Market Traders have lost a lot of their valuables due to poor roads networks and people not being able to handle the fires.
Many lives have also been lost in the slum areas of the city due to the lack of equipment used to put off the fire.
