Nairobi Tenants Call for Action as Management Issues Eviction Notices

A Nairobi woman is expressing frustration after receiving a sudden eviction notice following her complaints about the poor condition of her apartment.

Charity, a tenant at Faith Apartment in Imara Daima, raised concerns about persistent water outages lasting up to three weeks with the property management company, Capital Care Homes.

In an interview with Newsline.co.ke, she highlighted a lack of substantial communication from management regarding the ongoing water issues.

Rather than addressing her complaints, Charity revealed that she and three other tenants were instructed to vacate their homes.

“We haven’t had water for weeks, and management has provided no meaningful updates. The on-site representative is rude, and the apartment has become a health hazard, being dirty and rodent-infested. Purchasing water is costly, and instead of addressing our concerns, they served us with eviction notices when we spoke up,” she stated.

According to the eviction notice obtained by this publication, Charity is required to vacate by October 31.

She further noted that attempts to resolve the matter have been obstructed by the caretaker. “The caretaker refuses to listen to us and is very rude when we approach him. He has restricted the apartment’s WhatsApp group settings so only admins can post messages. We are frustrated, and he has blocked our efforts to contact the property owner to discuss our concerns. Families with children are at risk of health issues, and by the 10th, they’ll pressure us to pay rent,” Charity added.

In response to these claims, Joel from Capital Care Homes acknowledged the water issue, stating that they are working to resolve it.

However, he denied that the four tenants were asked to leave due to their complaints. Joel explained that the apartment’s owner wishes for his daughter to move into one of the units, leading to the need for one tenant to vacate.

Charity dismissed Joel’s defense as malicious, questioning why four tenants would be asked to leave if only one was needed. “Is the owner going to stay in four apartments?” she asked. Additionally, she refuted Joel’s assertion that the water issue is widespread, insisting that neighboring homes have a consistent water supply.
