A Nakuru businessman, James Kimani Mwangi, is grappling with a devastating loss after his electronics shop was burglarized on Saturday, September 7.
The 22-year-old entrepreneur from Wanyonyoro B, who had recently opened his business, arrived to find empty shelves and a large hole in one of the shop’s walls.
Mwangi explained that his electronics shop had only been operational for three months and that the journey to establish it had been challenging due to high startup costs.
Despite these initial struggles, he felt that his business was finally beginning to stabilize.
On the day of the incident, Mwangi had attended church as usual. He returned to his shop at around 7 p.m., intending to open it for a few hours.
“Venye nilifungua duka nilishtuka. Nilipata mangumuu zimetupanishwa na huko na simu nilikuwa nazo zimeenda zote. Kulikuwa pia na shimo kubwa kwa ukuta.”
However, upon entering, he was shocked to find that all his stock had been stolen, including mobile phones and accessories.
According to Mwangi, the goods taken were worth over Sh. 400,000, and the thieves had created a hole in the wall to gain entry.
This incident marks the second time Mwangi has fallen victim to theft. Earlier in February, while he was hawking phones, a customer had managed to steal one of his items.
Despite such setbacks, Mwangi had worked hard to secure a Sh. 60,000 loan from his bank and a local chamaa to set up his business.
Now, after the burglary, Mwangi is left in a precarious position. He expressed his concerns about repaying the phone company for the stolen inventory, which had been taken on credit.
To make matters worse, Mwangi revealed that his business was uninsured, leaving him with no safety net in the aftermath of the robbery.
Although Mwangi reported the incident to Bahati Police Station, he is frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation. He is currently unsure of the future of his business as he navigates this difficult situation.
