The Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders has officially given their approval for the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

This development underlines the deepening crisis in Meru County, with the governor facing her second impeachment attempt in less than a year.

Out of the 69 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), a substantial majority of 57 have declared their support for the impeachment, demonstrating a strong push against the embattled governor.

Last year, the governor faced an impeachment by the assembly, but her removal was thwarted by the Senate’s intervention.

Josphat Murangiri, the Secretary-General of Njuri Ncheke, has accused Mwangaza of operating independently, which has led to the support for her impeachment.

He argued that her actions have further exacerbated divisions within Meru County.

Murangiri stressed that the elders will not endorse anyone who has violated the unity of the Meru people and their neighbors. He has also thrown his support behind Kawira’s Deputy Governor, Isaac Mutuma, in case her impeachment succeeds.

Murangiri explained, “We are supporting the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza because she has disregarded the call to collaborate with all leaders in Meru County.”

He emphasized that the council’s commitment to preserving community values and unity remains unwavering.

Benjamin Mugambi, the Deputy Secretary-General of Njuri Ncheke, echoed Murangiri’s sentiments, affirming that the council’s declaration is final.

He refuted claims that Mwangaza represents the community, stating, “We have all reached a consensus that we support Kawira’s impeachment and the community will stand behind Mithika, who currently serves as the community spokesperson and the most senior politician.”

Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment has created a division within Njuri Ncheke, as some elders from Tigania West, Tigania East, and Tigania Central have expressed their dissent with the council’s decision.

Elder Adriano Aruyaru, representing Tigania West, openly voiced his opposition to the endorsement.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently urged political and religious figures in Meru to come together and resolve their differences for the sake of peace and development. He emphasized the importance of unity among the people of the mountain.

Albert Kasembeli, a political analyst, argued that Mwangaza should make efforts to reach out to all parties in order to promote unity and peace.

He warned that ongoing leadership disputes could hinder the county’s development, adding, “It is not appropriate for Njuri Ncheke elders to support Mwangaza’s impeachment.
