“There is one case where my security officers were following up when they arrived at the crime scene they found a parent hiding their son from a criminal suspect. We were shocked to discover the baby was hidden in a blanket, ”said Mr Otieno, at a security meeting in Likoni.

It has been reported that some of the children involved in street crime are as young as 12 years of age.

“Our security officers are committed to safeguarding security, we urge residents to work with us to end insecurity,” he said.

At the same time Mr Otieno ordered the chiefs and their deputies to take a record of all children under the age of 18 who do not go to school so that their parents can explain in detail the reasons for not sending them to school.

“Why are children wandering around and school is free? All children should be in school. “When they go to school, no one will carry a dull weapon to kill people and threaten security,” said Mr Otieno.

Meanwhile, the Mombasa County police commander, Mr Stephen Matu, challenged residents to provide information to security agencies about crime so that police officers could deal with them.

Over the past four months, residents of Mombasa, especially the Likoni, Kisiani and Nyali areas, have been experiencing insecurity as gangs of thugs re-emerge.

Security forces also issued a warning to some politicians recruiting youths to join criminal gangs.
