After weeks of pressure from county assembly members (MCAs) and the public, the senator for Kiambu County, Kimani Wamatangi, has finally released bursary application forms to the MCAs.

The bursary fund, aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged families, had been allocated funds in the county’s budget, but the application forms were not made available to the MCAs.

Frustrated by the delay, the MCAs had threatened to boycott all county assembly sessions until the forms were released, claiming that they were elected to serve the interests of their constituents, and the bursary fund was a crucial component of their mandate.

The pressure had mounted on Wamatangi, who had been accused of stalling the release of the forms to gain political mileage.

“I want to assure the MCAs and the public that the delay in releasing the forms was not deliberate. We encountered some logistical challenges that we have since resolved,” said Wamatangi.

The MCAs welcomed the move, noting that it was a victory for the people of Kiambu County.

“We are happy that the governor has finally listened to our demands. Our mandate is to serve the people, and we cannot do that effectively if we do not have the necessary tools to do so,” said one of the MCAs.

The bursary funds will be disbursed to successful applicants in the coming weeks, with priority given to students from low-income households.

The release of the bursary application forms is a reminder that elected officials are accountable to the people who elect them. The pressure exerted by the MCAs and the public played a crucial role in ensuring that the funds were released to those who need them most.
